Commercial, Brand Film or Social Ad: Which Do You Need?

"We need an ad" can mean three very different projects. A commercial sells a product or an offer in seconds. A brand film builds an emotional connection over a few minutes. A social ad stops someone scrolling and gets a reaction. They use the same cameras, but they are planned, written and edited differently. Choosing the right one — or the right mix — saves budget and gives better results.

The commercial

Goal: a specific action — buy, book, visit, call.

Length: usually 15, 30 or 60 seconds.

Where it runs: TV, cinema, YouTube pre-roll, paid digital placements, screens in malls and airports.

What it needs: a tight script, a single clear message, strong visuals, often actors or presenters, and a polished finish — colour, sound design and graphics. Every second is planned.

Budget drivers: casting, locations, set design, the number of shooting days and the level of post-production. Broadcast use may also require wider music and talent rights. See usage rights in production agreements.

The brand film

Goal: make people feel something about the company — trust, admiration, belonging.

Length: typically 1 to 3 minutes.

Where it runs: websites, launches, conferences, investor meetings, LinkedIn and YouTube.

What it needs: a real story — the founders, the craft, the customers, the purpose. It is often documentary in style, built on interviews and real footage, with music carrying the emotion. Read about brand story videos.

Budget drivers: research and interviews, several locations, time to capture real moments, and a careful edit.

The social ad

Goal: attention and a quick response — a click, a follow, a message.

Length: 6 to 30 seconds, often vertical.

Where it runs: Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube Shorts and LinkedIn feeds.

What it needs: a hook in the first second, captions for viewers watching without sound, a native look that fits the platform, and several variations to test. Related: paid social video ads.

Budget drivers: the number of variations, creators or presenters, and how often new versions are needed.

You can often get all three from one production

Planning matters more than budget here. A two-day shoot can produce a brand film, a 30-second commercial cut and a set of vertical social ads — if the shot list, framing and casting are planned for all of them from the start. More on this: shoot once for every format.

How to choose

Ask three questions:

  1. What should the viewer do or feel? Action points to a commercial or social ad; trust points to a brand film.
  2. Where will it be seen? TV and cinema need commercials; feeds need native vertical ads; your website and events suit brand films.
  3. How long must it last? A brand film can work for years; social ads need refreshing often.

Common mistakes

  • Turning a brand film into a 3-minute advert full of product features.
  • Running a 16:9 TV spot unchanged in vertical social feeds.
  • One social ad with no variations to test.
  • Forgetting that broadcast use needs the right music and talent licences.

Questions people ask

Which one should a new business make first?

Usually a short brand film or company profile, plus social cut-downs. It explains who you are and gives you material for months.

Can a social ad look professional and still feel native?

Yes. Good light, clean sound and fast editing make content look better without making it look like a TV advert.

How we produce them

At Fat Cat Media we have produced commercials, brand films and social campaigns in Dubai and across the UAE since 2012, often all from the same shoot. Our crew films in 6K with our own editors. See our commercials and brand films service and social media content.
